A contractor is building the 1-mile segment of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail (PHNST) through the Featherstone National Wildlife Refuge. Construction restarted after August 1, a delay required to give time for eaglets to fledge from a nearby nest.
As of August 16, progress is being made on a project budgeted for $3.9 million. Construction was delayed a year due to geotechnical issues (soft sediments unable to support the boadwalk were deeper than expected) and pauses required for eagle nesting.
